About Sutro

Sutro is an LLM-driven app builder that enables businesses to create custom software instantly - without writing a single line of code. A nontechnical person can describe a tool they need and it will be created, configured and deployed for them in a matter of minutes with ability for further AI-assisted improvements.

A bit like Bolt.new and Lovable, except that:

  1. we build production business software, not weekend projects and prototypes
  2. our software has to deeply work and guarantee it works correctly, rather than hoping that an LLM does a decent job
  3. Sutro can truly serve nontechnical users, not just technical AI enthusiasts.

Putting that together, our goal is to change the way the world builds software - to increase the level of abstraction on which people need to think to build fully functioning and guaranteed-to-work software.

We were founded in 2021 by Tomas Halgas, who successfully sold his previous company to Twitter (Sphere - now known as X Communities); before that he research AI and Compilers at Oxford and did ML & backend engineering at Facebook.

We are a Silicon Valley company, backed by Silicon Valley investors, with Silicon Valley work ethic, aiming for Silicon Valley results.

Team, culture and working hours

We are a team of 8, mostly past founders.

We are remote-first, with offices in Oakland (California) and Dubai. We have a preference for people to be in (or willing to relocate to) either of those two locations for a hybrid arrangement, but we are open to remote team members anywhere in the world.

Our primary location is Oakland (California) and as such our core working hours with everyone online are 8am-11am California time. Outside of that we are flexible, but changing the way the world builds software takes a lot of work, so we often work on weekends too.

We are all genuine, positive-minded, deeply caring and very fun to be around. We love getting all together twice a year.

Tech

Our code base is mostly written in TypeScript, with React (Native) for the frontend, with a particular focus on complex agentic workflows and many patterns from the fields of compilers and the theory of software languages.

Our code base is well tested and low on tech debt.

Because we are tackling the fundamental problems of software development, almost all projects require full-stack understanding from product & product design principles, through frontend engineering all the way to backend engineering and often even DevOps.

Your role

We are looking for a Senior Full Stack engineer. If you join us, you will own and lead engineering projects, work closely with Tom (our CEO, who will be your manager), other engineers, our designer and our go-to-market lead.
